Homemade De-Icer

Ok, I am not sure where everyone that follows me lives, but I can tell you, where I live we are in the depths of winter.

I don't mind shoveling a bit of light snow, but once we get that melt and then freeze it is deadly!  I faithfully keep a bag of rock salt and driveway products to sprinkle on, but once it gets super cold it just tends to bounce and roll away!

I came across this homemade formula, that will get that ice melting so that you can quickly scoop it off the driveway, porch, stairs or sidewalk.

I have tried this for the walkway and it works!

What you Will Need:

  • 1/2 gallon of hot tap water
  • 6 drops of dish soap
  • 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol
  • Mix

Pour over icy area and you will hear snap crackle and pop!

Give it a minute to do its job, and then scrape with your snow shovel.

Car Windshields

I read that you can put this in a spray bottle for your icy car windows, but I personally have not tried this yet.  The driveway and walkway was always my worst nightmare for the ice buildup.

The sun melts the snow and then it freezes overnight, so if you have run out of commercial de-icer, give this recipe a try.  It will save your back as it quickly disperses with the ice, so you can scrape it out of the way.

I will now make sure to keep rubbing alcohol in the house!

Three Ways to Add Light to a Rental Kitchen

As a renter, I don't want to invest in upgrades or harm any surface that will upset the landlord.  But... and that is a big BUT the counter lighting sucks!

I actually dreaded working in the kitchen which is sad because I like to cook, and the kitchen is the hub of many activities!

I went searching and found 3 awesome ways to light up the areas without investing a lot of money, wireless, (no plugging in) and they can actually come with you if you move.

1.  LED MOTION SENSER STRIP LIGHT

You can actually use these anywhere, such as closets, pantry, stairwells.  They come on automatically and turn off 15 seconds after you walk away.  But I seriously found them awesome for counter lighting.  If you have upper cabinets in your rental kitchen, you simply attach it to underneath and this will light up your work area.  For 35 bucks you get two of them!  Plus they are slim so you can't see them!

Aipolloo LED Motion Sensor Under Cabinet Lighting 2 Pack - 67 LEDs Magnet Closet Lights - Wireless Battery Operated 2500mAh Rechargeable Lighting - Magnetic Kitchen Counter Light - Black- HW40

2. PUCK LIGHTS

These are super cool too.  Especially if you have many areas to light as you get a 6pack.  I personally found the strip lights lit up a larger area, but these would work too and you can spread them around.

 3. CLAMP ON BATTERY LIGHT

If you have a small area you need to light up, or the table is maybe where you do your prep, then this battery operated clamp on light is a quick fix.  It is also rechargeable!

Desk Lamp Battery Operated Rechargeable Clip On Reading Light 3000mA Light up to 100 hrs Flexible Gooseneck Cordless Dimmable Lamp for Desk Bed Headboard Piano (Black)

I was so amazed at how many options there are on the market for lighting that doesn't cost and arm and a leg.

You can get super creative with lighting.  I have all kinds of ideas now!  I personally found the strip lighting will light up a larger area.  It comes with ways to stick them to under the cabinet, but I went with the 3M removable stickers so as not to cause damage if I remove them.

Although... I am sure your landlord would love for you to leave them behind!  Many kitchens, especially tiny ones, lack enough electrical outlets to cater to more lighting.  I love the place and am happy here, but I realized I will have to get creative if I want to cook anything without slicing my fingers off in a dark corner of the countertop.

Most wireless options tend to be rechargeable too, so that you don't need to stock piles of batteries, which is awesome from an environmental point of view.

CHANGE THE LOOK OF THE KITCHEN WITH LIGHTING

It is amazing just how you can turn that dark counter in your kitchen into a warm and welcoming area.  Just because we rent doesn't mean we can't personalize these spaces just a little more to make them home!

I hope I have inspired you to get creative!  If you plan on staying in your rental for a while, or even just a few months, make it feel like home.  Lighting is everything especially in the depths of winter.  It creates a warm and welcoming environment.

How to Get Rid of Mice From Your Home or Cottage

Autumn is the most popular time for mice to try and find someplace warm to hang out and if they can get into your house or cottage they will!

They are super sneaky and can fit through the tiniest of cracks.  So the best defense is to take offense and stop them at the door!

Here are 3 Ways to Put Mice Off or Get Rid of the Ones That Have Moved In

Dryer Sheets - This one has worked well for me, especially if it is the cottage or some rooms you are not always in.

Place unused dryer sheets on the beds, in the closets and in the basement.  Leave them there for a couple of weeks, then replace them.  The bonus?  Your house will smell nice.  Mice cannot stand the smell.

Peppermint Oil - Mice cannot stand the smell of peppermint oil.  If you have an idea where they might be coming in, place some peppermint oil on some cotton face swabs and leave there.  This also works for cars that you may be covering and storing for the winter.  Mice can do a lot of damage to upholstery.

Using an Ultrasonic Pest Controller - Apparently, mice cannot stand the frequency and it puts them off moving into your home at all.

You can get these online with Amazon as you see above.  Perfect if you are hearing them in the walls and need to get rid of many mice.

Other Ways to Prevent Them Getting In.

House Plants Outdoors?

If you put your house plants out for the summer and are ready to bring them back in, inspect the pot and place some peppermint oil on swabs or dryer sheets lightly on top of the soil for a day or too before bringing them inside

My mother found out the hard way when she brought in her floor plant.  Mice had actually built a nest in the pot and she only found out when she got into the house.  The numerous mice fled as soon as she got in.

Caulking Any Tiny Holes Around Foundation

I was once told, if a quarter can fit through the hole sideways... so can a mouse!  Inspect your foundation for any cracks or holes.

A good way to do that, is to have someone in the basement at night time with lights out while you shine a flashlight around the foundation.. any holes should show up.   This also works for spiders!!

Keep Cereal And Any Boxed Dry Goods In Plastic Containers with Lids

This is especially true for the cottage.  If you can remove the food source, mice are not as interested.
A few spills here and there and it attracts them like a magnet.

How to Clean a BBQ Grill Easily

It's that time of year with the sun out, drinks on the patio and that bbq cooking your favorite foods..  ahhhh summer living!

But after a few meals, that bbq grill tends to build up burnt on food and grime.  You can try and burn it off by keeping the bbq going after you have cooked your food, but that is not super efficient and I find it simply cakes up on the grills.

You could take them inside and use oven cleaner,

or

you can use this simple method:

VINEGAR and TIN FOIL

This really works and then there are no fears of harsh chemicals transferring to your next meal.

What You Will Need:

Spray bottle filled with plain white vinegar

Balled up pieces of tin foil.

Method:

1.  When your BBQ is cold, spray white vinegar onto your grill.

2.  Wait about 15 minutes

3.  Use your balled up tin foil to go back and forth along the grills and you will be amazed at what comes off!

The tin foil is basically your scrubber brush.  Works super well.

Have an awesome summer!

Homemade Nail Polish Remover DIY

With this pandemic going on, we do have to get creative with some of our personal care.

If you have been doing your own nails/pedicures then you know just how stinky and toxic that nail polish remover can be.

I found this recipe, and it really does work!  So if you find yourself wanting to work on your personal grooming ie: nails! ... and you don't have any remover at home, or don't want to use harsh chemicals...  Check this idea out.

What you Will Need:

Lemon juice (the stuff in the bottle works well too)

white vinegar

cotton balls

Method:

1.  Mix equal parts of lemon juice with white vinegar.

2.  Soak some cotton balls in the mixture.

3.  Then press a cotton ball soaked in the mixture against your nails and hold it for at least 30 seconds.

You will see that the mixture has begun to dissolve your polish.

That is It!!!!!

It does work.  It does take slightly longer, but you get the same result without the harsh chemicals.

If this is not your idea of fun, you can also purchase complete nail care packages online.

Have fun and spend some time and effort on yourself. Doing your nails or a pedicure can make you feel like a million bucks! Take care and stay safe!

Recycling Berry Containers - Repurpose Those Plastic Holders

I love blueberries.  But when I purchase them at my local grocery store, they are in those plastic containers.

I simply throw them in the recycling bin when done, but the other day I looked at one and realized I could use this in my yard.  Repurpose, reduce, recycle right?

There are holes in the plastic ones for airflow and you can put this to good use in your yard.

Small Grass Patch?

Wash and dry the plastic container, hold your hand underneath and fill with grass seed, wild flower seeds, anything that needs spreading.

Head to your yard and shake this container around.  It will evenly spread the seeds!

Spot Seeding?

Perfect for redoing spots in your lawn where you just need a small amount of seeds.

Starting Seedlings, Mini Greenhouse, Craft Supplies...

Take the top off and use both pieces.  Sit them in a tray and fill with your soil and seeds.  The holes make great drainage.

...or leave the lids on and put your seeds in a sunny spot and this will create a greenhouse effect.

...Craft Supplies, especially ribbon holders which are famous for getting tangled.

Have I got your Creative juices flowing???   Good, now take a second look at food containers before you pitch them, it is amazing what you can come up with.

If you get creative, you can find all kinds of uses for berry plastic containers.

How to Clean Your Hair Brush and Stop The Dull Hair

The hair brush can really start to build up especially if you use hair products.

No matter how long or short, it will build up with oils, hair, products and more, which in turn can dull the shine of your beautiful hair!  To get a squeaky clean brush, follow these simple steps.  You will be amazed at just how much better your head will feel!

Step 1 - Gather supplies...

Pair of sharp nail scissors or similar

Rat tail comb (for the long slim pointy handle part or a slim stick)

Toothbrush dedicated to your hair brush cleaning!

Step 2 - Carefully cut between rows of bristles with the scissors.  This makes it easier to lift the hair.

Step 3 - Using the rat tail comb or some kind of pointy stick, slowly lift the hair sections off the brush.  This can be a bit tedious, but very effective.

Step 4 - Pour a small amount of shampoo on the brush and using the toothbrush, gently shampoo the base and bristles.

Step 5 - Rinse and repeat

Step 6 - Place hair brush bristles down on a clean towel to dry.

Most of the quality hair brushes tend to be "round" which means there is a little ball on the end of the bristles which can make it difficult to simply lift the hair with a comb without breaking them.

Hair brushes are expensive these days, and you don't want to be breaking those little round balls off the bristles, so by cutting gently between the rows you can lift the hair.

Also avoid using a knife as you can easily damage the base.

One more thing you can do during the Pandemic Lockdown!

Now you should notice clean shiny hair!   If you do this at least once a month you won't get the build up and it will be easier to clean.

DIY Windshield Washer - Winter Car Hack

Winter means slushy roads, snow and dirt on your car windshield and you can easily get thru jugs of the bought stuff.

If you run out of supply and you don't want to head to the store in that "cold icky stuff, or with the current pandemic issues" then here is how you can create your own windshield washer in a pinch that doesn't freeze and is cheap to make!

What you Will Need:

1/2 cup Rubbing alcohol

4 x cups Water

1 teaspoon dish soap

Jug

Method:

In a bowl mix the 4 cups of water with the 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol (this prevents freezing) and then add the 1 x teaspoon of dish soap (this gives the mixture some cleaning power).

Pour into a empty jug or anything that is easy to pour from while under the hood of your car.

Handy Car Hack Recipe for these Trying Times

In my area, stores are closed and roadside pickup only, which works if you are ordering ahead of time, but I was running out and didn't want to be caught with none, so I found this recipe online and it works.  You can even add a bit of blue food coloring to it, so it looks just like the real thing and you know what is in the jug!

If you would prefer to have the real stuff on hand during this pandemic, you can also order cases of it online with Amazon below:

Which ever way you decide to go, keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol on hand for these car emergencies!  It won't be a waste as it is also a good disinfectant.

Stay safe on the roads out there!  Keep your windshield washer topped up.  Keep a spare jug in the car.

DIY Lazy Susan to Organize Your Refrigerator

In my refrigerator, there are tons of bottled sauces, that I still want to keep.  They stay fresh for a long time, but they are taking up a lot of shelf room and I have to drag them all out when I am looking for a particular one.

DIY LAZY SUSAN to the rescue.

If you have one of these, then use it in your refrigerator.  If you don't... you can make you own simple one with a few supplies you may have on hand.

What you will need:

2 x sturdy pie plates the same size..  I used the glass ones I had in my cabinets.. not much of a pie baker so this puts them to good use!

1x bag of standard sized marbles (dollar store) all the same size.

That is it!

Method:

Take the one pie plate, and fill with the marbles in one even layer.

Place the other pie plate on top

The top one will now spin.  The marbles act like ball bearings.

Now clean your refrigerator out and get rid of unused and past the sell by date bottles and sauces.

Place the ones you use the most often on your lazy Susan and now you simply have to spin it around to find what you need.

You could use this set up for anything in your refrigerator.  The goal is to not have things work their way to the back of the fridge and become science projects!

This keeps your fridge organized and you don't repeat purchase things you don't need.  I am loving this!

If you are not into DIY, then you can purchase a lazy Susan online with Amazon below:

These easy to use storage ideas, are not only for your kitchen cabinets but work perfectly in the refrigerator too!

How to Repurpose a Real Christmas Tree - Since You Missed the Local Pickup Date

If you have been enjoying your real Christmas tree, all the decorations and the lights, and then noticed into January that the free pickup and recycle of the holiday tree just drove by....  do not despair!

How to Repurpose that Christmas Tree for the Winter Months

You can take the tree yourself to parks and designated spots your local township offer for the free chipping and mulching, or you can do this....

1.  Find a sturdy large Flower Pot from the summer months still full of dirt and place your tree in this pot, or a large tote and fill with rocks..

(or failing that wire it to a fence to keep it from blowing away in your yard)

2.  Fill the branches with food the birds and squirrels will love.

3.  Now You have a yard ornament that will keep you entertained until the spring!

Homemade Bird Feeder Ideas

1.  Collect pine cones, and butter them with peanut butter, and then roll in bird seed and hang from the branches and watch the birds enjoy.  This one works really well at attracting birds.

2.  Hang slices of oranges with ribbon to add some color and feed the colorful birds.

3.  Create little feeders from milk cartons and hang in the tree.

Hopefully this has got you thinking....

Failing that you can also purchase affordable feeders online here:

You can make your own or purchase a few to add to your tree. By repurposing your Christmas tree you create places for the birds to hide in the branches and some much needed nourishment for the winter months.

In the spring you can compost the tree or cut it up and use the branches.  It is amazing just how fast the birds will find this instant tree full of food and entertain the family during these lockdown times.

Repurpose that Christmas Tree This Year and Help the Birds!

So if you missed the free pickup of trees or simply don't want to cram that tree back in the car and face all those needles again, and you have a yard, then give the above option a try.

As long as you can secure the tree so it doesn't blow away you have instant entertainment for the entire winter months.

Maybe this will become your new Christmas tradition!!

DIY Wrist Wallet on the Cheap

If you love the idea of not dragging a purse everywhere, and simply want a place to store your essential cards or drivers license, or a spare mask, then check out this video on making a wrist wallet.

Perfect for out walking the dog, jogging, or anywhere!

I have decided simple is better, and especially with the winter months around the corner, dragging a purse into the stores all seems a bit unsanitary with the COVID going on.  I figure the less to handle the better. I can even store a spare mask in here.

This is a very simply pattern, and the video is not too long.

After the Covid...

Once this pandemic is under control and you can put on your dancing shoes and head to parties and clubs, this wrist wallet would be perfect.  No more fears of stolen purses.  You can keep cash and cards in this wallet, it holds a surprising amount.

DIY Gift Ideas?

If the budget is tight this year, then getting creative and making your gifts, can really personalize it.  You can pick fabrics you know they will love, and it will be something a littler different.  Or repurpose clothing you have into wrist wallets.

Not Big on DIY?

If you want this wrist wallet to hold more, such as a cell phone, you can also purchase these online for guys and girls.  Check them out:

Homemade Car Interior Cleaning Solutions - All Natural

Has your car interior seen better days?  Is the sun shining through the filthy windshield and highlighting the dust, dirt and grime on the dashboard?

This is the sad state of my car.  I didn't want to go and buy and car cleaning products, so I researched on how to clean the car interior, especially the dashboard with products you use everyday.  Check it out.

To Clean the Dashboard and All Vinyl Surfaces

What you will need:

White vinegar

Water

clean cloth

Method:

Mix equal parts white vinegar with warm water into a spray bottle, and spray on your dashboard and then wipe off with the cloth.  If super greasy and dirty, let it sit for a few minutes.

Vinegar is the best cleaner for the vinyl and dashboard since regular household cleaners are too harsh and tend to leave a film.

THIS WORKS!

Now condition the surfaces.

How to Condition the Dashboard and All Vinyl Surfaces

What you will need:

Olive oil

Clean cloth

Method:

Take your clean cloth put a LITTLE olive oil on the cloth and then wipe onto the surface and then rub in and wipe off.

You don't need much olive oil.  You will get a feel for the right amount, best to start with a tiny amount.

Car Upholstery and Carpets

If your upholstery is looking sad and stained...

What you will need:

1 x cup of white vinegar

2 x drops of dish soap

1 x gallon of warm water

Method:

1.  Vacuum the seats and carpets first to get rid of crumbs and debris.

2.  Take a cloth or soft scrubber brush and dip into the water/vinegar/ dish soap solution and dab and scrub at the stains.  Don't over saturate, the idea is to just get rid of the dirt and stains.

3.  Let dry.

Hopefully the above were helpful hints to clean and bring the inside of your car to life on the cheap, without having to risk your health in a store.

Then there is always new car mats or seat covers you can buy online if the dirt has simply gone to far!!  check out below for ideas.

STAY SAFE EVERYONE!

How to Clean a Smelly Couch

I came into the house one day after cleaning everything and my house just had a smell.  Just a cat, dog, stinky feet, sweaty, odd,  not nice smell.

After much investigation, I realized it was my couch.  I had removed animal fur and really vacuumed it, and it looked nice, but that lingering smell was still there.  This couch always has family and pets on it, so I wanted a way to make it smell better.

I FOUND A WAY TO CLEAN A SMELLY COUCH!

This works.

What you will need:

Box of baking soda

Pinesol (original cleaner)

Warm water

Micro fibre cloth

Scented Dryer Sheets

Vacuum cleaner

An afternoon

Method:

Step 1:  Sprinkle the baking soda over the couch liberally.

Step 2:  Let it sit for at least an hour

Step 3:  Vacuum all the baking soda off the couch, cushions and under the cushions

Step 4:  Take approx 1/4 cup of pinesol and mix with about a quart of warm water.  (Test this mixture somewhere on the couch to make sure it doesn't react to the fabric first)

Step 5:  With your micro fibre cloth, dunk in pinesol mixture and wring out well then rub all over the couch.

Watch this video to see how she does this with the cloth.

Step 6:  Let it dry for a few hours.

Step 7:  Take the dryer sheets and open the zipper in the cushions and and place the scented unused sheet in the cushion.

Your odors should not be gone!

Don't get rid of that fabric couch before giving the above steps a try. It definitely deserves another chance and will save you money in the end.

Boho Hippie Quotes - How to Fill a Blank Wall with Printable Wall Art on the Cheap

If you have just moved to a new place and finances are tight, there are ways to add decor to your walls on the cheap.

Personally I love Boho hippie decor, but more specifically quotes.   This ETSY SHOP is called GOOD VIBES WORD ART and it has over 250 print at home quotes mostly in 8x10 size which makes it easier to print for you.

I love quotes because they are easy to print at home without using up all your ink.  You simply pick the ones you want and add dollar store or shabby chic thrift store frames and you are done!

STAY WILD MOON CHILD  Boho hippie quote in a minimalist black and white old typewriter font.  This one is an 8x10 which you simply download and print.  Look for ones with minimal quotes like this one and you can quickly fill your walls.

TAKE A BATH YOU DIRTY HIPPIE  This would make a fun print for the bathroom.  You can fill the walls with printable quotes or even just have it sitting like this picture as vanity decor or to add some fun and humor on the cheap!

Printables are Instant

I started using printables as quick wall or shelf decor recently.  With the pandemic slowing down the mail deliveries, I thought they were a quick way to do some decorating while we are all at home!

Cover a Bad Wall

If you are renting and can't do any DIY such as fixing holes or painting, using printable quotes and adding them to different sized shabby chic or dollar store frames will cover that wall with something way more interesting!

You can use the 3M hooks that cause ZERO damage below:

This way you can fill the wall with pictures, quotes and not worry about damage or little holes or having to get picture hooks.

Create a Wall of Inspiration

If you are not a fan of the hippie era, there are also inspirational and motivational quotes that are perfect to fill a wall from this site too!

You will draw inspiration from them every day.

So take that boring wall and simply fill it with quotes.  Try different frames and colors, and simply have fun.  They add some whimsy, fun and double as decor and a wall update at the same time.

How to Stay Cool Without AC

I don't know about you, but the last week or so where I live has been stifling hot.  I love the summer and would never trade it for winter, but even me, a die hard summer lover, can do without some of the excess heat!

Not every house is equipped with central air, and it is expensive to run.  A window unit works but they do suck extra power, and maybe you rent?  A DIY is not in the cards.  So here are a few ideas that have worked for me.

1.  Fan Blowing Over Bowl of Ice

Take a regular osculating fan, and place on a secure surface such as a table, and then place a bowl of ice in front of the fan and keep it stationary (not moving around).

This actually works super well to quickly cool yourself down while working, in the kitchen or wherever you are seated.

2.  Homemade Air Conditioning (how to video)

If you have a bit more time on your hands, then check out this video.  It is basically the same idea as idea number 1, but the cool air will last longer as the ice is in a insulated Styrofoam cooler.

Check out the video:

According to the author of this video it only cost him 8 bucks to make (but he also had a fan already).

But this would definitely work for cooling a room.  This is an awesome idea to keep an area cool.  Create a cooling room in your home, such as the bedroom so you have a place to go when things get too hot.

3.  Purchased Personal Air Coolers

There has been much progress in the world of purchased air coolers that do not need to be exhausted out windows or heavy and cumbersome.  I found some of these on Amazon below.

These are great options if you simply need to cool yourself. No DIY or taking out windows or huge electricity bills. I hope the ideas above help you get creative when it comes to living with excess heat for yourself and your family.

Back Yard Water Feature on the Cheap No Wires

We had an old shed that was an eye sore that needed to be taken down in the back corner of our yard.

Once we got it down and had all the debris removed, we had plans of shrubs and gardens but the entire area under what was the floor was full of large tree roots.

The rest of the yard did not have this, I suppose because this was the back corner of the fenced yard, that the larger trees there had taken over the under side of the shed.  No way we could plant shrubs.

We made the decision to create a water feature using solar as we didn't want to run wiring.  This is just a tiny feature but it has attracted birds and sounds beautiful and I will add more potted plants to sit on the stones.

How we created this corner water feature!

Step 1 - clear away debris left from shed and turn over soil at fence line.

Step 2 - Dig a small impression, which is all we could do because of old tree roots.

Step 3 - Lay a square of pond liner in the impression, and then garden carpet for rest of area (to stop weeds)

Step 4 - Fill area with pretty stones from garden center (found a sale on these red ones but river stones would look nice too.)

Step 5 - Place little pump in impression and add more stones to secure the pump and hide the wire.

Step 6 - Place solar panel where it can catch sun rays.

Step 7 - Comes with a remote so you can switch on and off.

We purchased this solar fountain pump on Amazon, (check out the options below) There are different sizes. We just wanted a small one to add some interest.

Step 8 - Add some plants around it.  In our case we had a shady corner with no roots to interfere so added hostas and an older fountain that didn't work anymore, but will add air plants to the bowls for added interest.  I don't throw anything away!

Step 9 - Add water to fill impression.

The pump started working right away.  They are super modern now, with battery storage and everything so you can even use these fountains in the evening.

It keeps the water moving, and the birds super happy as they tend to bath in the shallow water.

TIP:

Big birds thought the wire was something to take away like worms, so make sure you gently hide the wire under the stones!

Will add Potted Plants in Cute Recycled Pots as I Get them, to sit on the large area of stones.

This will become our little zen area.  So a ugly looking shed just gave us a little bit of extra yard for a zen garden.

With no need for power, you can have all kinds of fun designing your own zen area.  Garden weed barrier carpet is the answer for keeping weeds out of the stones.  Just spread it out where you will place the stones and then cover it.

It still allows rain to get through but no weeds to grow through it.

We got everything online.

You could have just a tiny corner or a part of your garden to add some interest and water sounds.  Without the worries of where to put the wiring, you basically have a blank canvas when it comes to water features in the garden.

Create your own zen garden!

Obviously it all depends on how large or deep your water feature is to be.  We didn't want a pond just a simple nice sounding fountain and this was perfect for us.  We didn't have to wait for it to power on, it started right away!

Easy Homemade Hummingbird Food

I love hummingbirds, but where I live the season is short lived.  They show up beginning of June when all the flowers are coming out, and leave first week of September.

So while they are here I really like to enjoy them.

I have always made my own food for them.  As long as the feeder you choose is brightly colored, you do not need the red dye that is in the commercial products, and really it is super easy to make your own.  Much better for the little guys.

Hummingbird Food Recipe

  • 1/4 cup of white sugar (not icing sugar or brown, simple white granulated sugar)

  • 1 x Cup of Water  (I use kettle water or filtered water which has no chlorine)

Method:

Step 1 - Place the sugar in a small saucepan and then add the water, stir to mix.

Step 2 - Bring to a boil for 30 seconds.

Step 3 - Place lid on saucepan and set aside off the heat

Step 4 - Let Cool to room temperature.

Step 5 - Place in clean hummingbird feeder.

THAT IS IT! Much cheaper than store bought mix.

You can make double batches and keep one batch in the refrigerator if you wish, but I simply make and use it.

Place your hummingbird feeder either on a high feeder pole or planter hook and near some shrubs or trees where they can rest or escape and not feel exposed to predators.

There are some super cool hummingbird feeders online.  I decided this year to replace mine and add a couple more as they also add some decor to the yard.  There are some super attractive ones online.

Best Way to Attract Hummingbirds?

Is to place the feeder beside a hanging plant that is flowering with bright red or orange flowers.  They love those colors and this will attract them to your feeder.

I use a tall garden double hook and hang a flower basket in bloom from one hook and the feeder from the other.  I don't just place it in the center of the yard, I put it closer to shrubs or hiding spots but somewhere where I can still enjoy them.

While sitting on the patio they are a true wonder to watch.

I hope I have inspired you to feed these little guys in your yard.  You will see them if you plant lots of flowers, but the feeder is a nice addition plus they act as garden decor.

Don't place this feeder with the regular bird feeders, they are put off by bigger birds.  Give them their own corner or spot where they can feed.  They burn energy fast, so as long as you keep your feeder filled with fresh food they will keep returning.

Replace the food twice a week in the hot weather otherwise one a week or when it is down will work too.

How to Clean the Feeder

I simply take it in the house and pull it apart in the sink and wash it all with super hot water.  I don't use any soap just hot water.

You can use a bottle brush if yours gets a bit icky on the inside, but I have found as long as you replace with fresh food on a regular basis it doesn't get too icky.

DIY Squirrel Deterrent - 3 Natural Ways to Keep Them Out of Your Flower and Veggie Gardens

I absolutely love squirrels, and YES I do feed them with their very own feeder (this keeps them out of my bird feeder, but this is another story!)

But what I don't like is when you first plant your flowers and veggies in lovely dug up soil.  Squirrels just LOVE being able to dig, bury or simply mess about in fresh garden soil, including hanging pots and planters!

I live in an area full of squirrels, and so I have discovered different ways to deter them from flowers and veggies.

3 Ways to Keep Squirrels Away From Your Fresh Dug Garden

1.  HUMAN HAIR - YES, this works.  Go in the house, and find your hairbrush or your kids or anyone in the household or even friends (although that might seem like a weird request!) and pick hair strands out and then place close to the plant.

2.  PET HAIR - YES, this works too.  Give your dog or cat a good brushing and empty the hair into the flower pots or in your veggie garden.

Squirrels have a keen smell and either one of the above are predators in their world, and they don't like the smell.

Personally I have found the human hair to work the best, because in my yard the squirrels have no fear of the cats!

3.  PEPPERMINT OIL - Find some tissues and put a few drops of peppermint oil on it and place in a few spots around your garden.

Digging in Flower Pots?

I found one of my freshly planted petunias yesterday laying in the yard from my hanging basket.  I make them myself so the flowers were from the cell packs you get at the garden center.

The squirrels just love to jump up to and dig in the pots for whatever reason, so I replanted it and placed the strands of hair around the flowers and so far so good.

Once they are more established, they don't tend to mess in the flower pots anymore.  But in those first few weeks, they are right in there making a mess.

If you would prefer a commercial product, there are safe ones online such as ultrasonic sounds and other products to keep the squirrels out of the flowers and veggies and even your roof.

But give the first 3 ideas a try. I know it is frustrating especially when you have done all the work, and then have to replant. I found this works for skunks and raccoons too.

DIY All Natural Homemade Shampoo

With us all staying at home during this trying time, our hair care routine might be out of whack.

I came across this recipe and video on just how to make homemade shampoo that has no chemicals and is good for your hair and scalp.

If you don't have the ingredients, you can order them online (I get mine at Amazon, links below).

Since haircuts are not happening nor the nice deep conditioning my hairdresser gave me, I found regular store bought shampoos after awhile dry out my hair.  Give this a shot.

You can get coconut milk at the grocery store these days, but you can also order that online if needed.

What you will Need for an All Natural Shampoo that Will Leave Your Hair Shining.

  • 1/3 cup of unsweetened coconut milk (make sure it's the milk and not the oil)
  • 1/3 cup of liquid castile soap
  • 1/3 cup aloe vera organic juice
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil (to smell nice and help the scalp)

Method:

Mix together, and pour into a clean bottle, or save your last shampoo bottle.

If you keep the ingredients on hand, you could make many batches of this beautiful shampoo that has zero chemicals that strip the hair.

You can also try the grocery store health aisle if you can't get it online.  With the way things are, I am trying to order online as much as I can.

So, if you are presently at home, and would like to pamper yourself with a nice hair treatment, try this homemade shampoo, you won't even need conditioner.

It is amazing just how nice your hair can look (yes I know your style has probably grown out) with this homemade or DIY shampoo.

After the initial investment, this will work out super cheap!  You will never go back to commercial shampoo again.

Stay well and stay safe everyone!

DIY Bag Gardening Without Containers or Pots on the Cheap

This growing season will be unlike any other growing season as we all try to navigate these trying times.

As people begin to realize the issues of heading to a grocery store or supply of fresh food, many have turned to growing their own veggies this year.  We have come full circle.  Not that many years ago everyone had vegetable gardens but with busy lives this became difficult.

Now that the garden centers are open, many have run short on containers, as many try container veggies for the first time in small spaces.  I came across an awesome idea for the small garden without containers and on the cheap.

Check out this video to see just how easy it is.

He simply opens the top off of a plastic bag of soil mix.  He has it on some hay, but you could sit it on a small pallet or some plastic crates, or something to help with drainage.

Get Creative with Containers Veggies Are Not Picky!

If you are trying to grow food in a small space or on a balcony for the first time, and don't have any containers, or they are too big an investment, then consider using the reusable grocery shopping bags.

Fabric Reusable Shopping Bags as Gardens

These will work too.  Just roll them down and fill with potting soil.  The fabric style ones will naturally drain, but the plastic ones will need some holes in the bottom.

Look Through Your Home for Container Substitutes!

Get creative, look through your home.  You can even use low tote boxes, as long as you drill some holes in the bottom for drainage.

I am loving the grocery bag idea, as I have a closet full of them.    I didn't realize I had the potential for many growing pots stuffed in my closet!

So no containers?  get out the shopping bags, or simply cut open the bag as he did in the video.

Or you can also invest in vertical gardens if you plan on continuing this venture online as you can see below:
