If you have downsized, or rent then you know that either...

1.  There is no floor space for plants or gardens and...

2.  The landlord says no to digging up the yard.

But there are ways to enjoy greenery and veggies by utilizing the walls.  Whether inside or out you can still have a garden space.

Balcony Vegetable Garden

If you have a balcony in your rental or condo or even just a tiny patio space, you can utilize the outdoor walls or railings to grow veggies.

Thinking outside the box and researching a few ideas I came across these products that would help grow an awesome veggie garden by using the wall space or inside the railing.

This one has 36 self watering pockets that you could attach to the inside of the balcony railing or on the wall.  As long as you can get some daylight you can grow veggies.

In a small space or apartment you can take advantage of wall space and keep your floor space open.  Creating a living wall is the perfect way to grow veggies or flowers or whatever you wish.

12 Pocket Vertical Wall Planter

This one is made in the USA from recycled nylon felt and is super lightweight.  It has tabs so you could slip it onto a rail or any kind of hanging system.  This would be perfect for the inside of balcony railings.

It can act as privacy for your balcony and it can grow veggies or flowers.  Creating a living wall with these pockets is a wonderful way to dress up your space and keep your floor space open.

Hanging Flower Pouches

If you want to also grow pretty flowers and really brighten up your balcony railing or walls, you can hang these pouches on the inside of the balcony or railing and enjoy a beautiful flower garden without any pots on the floor.

There is plenty of vertical space to secure an area for your fresh veggies and herbs and then also allow room for your pretty flowers and you can create an awesome oasis on your patio or balcony without using any floor space at all.

As you can see this bag can hang on the railing on the inside to create not only beautiful flowers but create privacy as well.  Best of both worlds.

Beautiful Wall Air Plants

If you goal is to simply dress up a wall either inside your home or out on the balcony or back patio, you can use these really cool air plants, that don't need soil.

These would look awesome inside or outside if the air temperature is suitable.  Definitely would dress up a balcony wall or fence.

                                            Tillandsia Air Plant Kit

After much research I found that you can get these air plants online in a kit.  This kit includes 11 plants and one bottle of special fertilizer.

Tillandsia's are powerful air cleaners as well as beautiful  You can arrange them in an artistic way and many people refer to them as living art.

They only need watering once a week and don't require any soil, so you can display them in a grouping to get the best effect on the wall.  This is definitely wall gardening!

Vertical wall gardening doesn't have to be just vegetables, it can be gorgeous flowers, or air plants, or anything you want.

Why just hang pictures when you can create living walls?

Plants are so good for air quality, and what better place to use them then on the wall. Vertical wall gardening has taken off especially with many people downsizing or not wanting the back breaking work or tilling and weeding a conventional garden.

You can create an awesome oasis of fresh herbs and veggies, flowers and greenery that can help de-stress you from your day.

Don't forget to consider the walls when it comes to your garden.  Veggies can grow in pockets of soil, they don't have to have huge land areas.  Imagine just picking fresh tomatoes off your balcony?

Balcony Vegetable Garden - How to Grow a Garden on a Balcony Using Vertical Garden Planters

If you have downsized, or simply would love to feel nature and all you have is your apartment balcony, there is a way!

Using the vertical space and less floor space is the key to enjoying this area.  Any nature whether flowers, greenery, herbs or vegetables have been knows to reduce stress and if you can't get to the forest then bring some forest to you!

Vertical Gardening Kit

Step 1 - Measure out your space - Figure out just how much floor space you can dedicate to plants.  Since large pots take up lots of floor area it is best to try and fit as much as you can in a small area.  This 5 tier shelf is only 11 inches deep and is designed for outdoor use.

You would then need to invest in pots that would fit on these shelves. You could get square ones all the same size especially if you wish to grow herbs, or some veggies. This way you could use all the shelf space and totally transform the plain brick wall at one end or even both ends of your balcony.

This one is a bit more of an investment but is super cool. It is free standing, takes up very little room and can basically transform your balcony or small patio into a complete veggie or flower garden.

It is self watering, meaning you don't have to water each pocket, you simply fill the reservoir at the top and it trickles down to all the pockets. You could pick your own tomatoes, strawberries, even potatoes. Super cool idea for a balcony or small patio or a rental space where you can't dig up the yard.

If you prefer cedar, this vertical garden planter will fit the bill nicely.  It also includes a irrigation system to keep your plants watered.  This looks awesome when filled with veggies and basically anything green and alive.

Imagine sitting outside on your balcony with your morning coffee...

......or that glass of wine after work surrounded by vertical gardens.  The problem with small balconies has always been the floor space.  By the time you get your little table and chairs out there there, you are tripping over large round flower pots etc.

Cedar Vertical Garden Planters

By using the vertical space and less floor space, you can not only have a beautiful flower garden to enjoy and d-stress with, but you can also grow your own food.  No need to start seeds inside if you have a roof and sides to your balcony because frost doesn't tend to penetrate these areas.

The side walls are perfect for gardens to give you something better to look at than the brick walls.  There are no holes to be drilled or hangers to install.

If you love the idea of growing your own herbs, you can do this on the balcony too. Imagine picking your own when you are cooking by simply stepping out to the balcony or patio from your vertical gardens.

How to Make a Pallet Vertical Garden Planter

This is a really cool video.  If you have wall space that you are allowed to attach to, this would be awesome, but I would also think that you cool simply lean the pallet against the wall if there is no wind on your balcony.

He even shows you have to create awesome little planters from soda bottles.  This is a really neat way to decorate a balcony wall or small patio fence, or I am sure you could rig this to stand alone.

I know in my area there are pallets everywhere for firewood, so this would be a great way to get free vertical planters if you don't mind a little bit of DIY.

Are you inspired to create your own oasis yet?

I hope you are, I know I am inspired to get more use out of my tiny patio area.  If you rent your space, the above balcony gardening ideas hopefully have got you inspired.

For a small investment you can now basically turn any area into an instant oasis.

Whether you attach to the wall or have a free standing planter, there are ways to turn even the tiniest of spots into a welcoming green space and even food.  ENJOY!

Vertical Garden Planters are Perfect for Any Rental Space

Many landlords are not a fan of you digging up their yards especially if you are renting a house or townhouse.

But don't let that defeat you.  You can still grow your own veggies, herbs or flowers using portable vertical gardening kits and planters.  Make your own such as with the pallet idea and some garden cloth or purchase different styles online.

Also check out Vertical Gardening Books for more ideas.

You could instantly create a gorgeous oasis or retreat on a tiny patio or backyard without so much as a spade dug in the ground.  You can get lots of big round pots for the ground, but then you risk killing the grass and taking up a lot of space, I totally love the idea of free standing vertical gardens that take up very little ground or floor space.

This is something to consider if you are renting and want to personalize your outdoor space no matter how small it is.  Create your very own portable retreat or oasis.
