Small Bathroom Makeover Ideas on the Cheap – Quick DIY for this Tiny Space

Bathrooms technically are the smallest room in the house and yet they can drain your bank account fast if you do a gut renovation.  I was stunned at just how much it can cost to get someone in to renovate this tiny room.

On top of all of that is the construction mess, and if this is your only bathroom then this creates another set of problems.  Hopefully this article helps you with your small space.

In a hurry? (bathroom organizers and ideas) to get you started.

Small Bathroom Ideas for Cheap

After surviving a few bathroom makeovers, I decided that was not going to happen in this house.  I simply did not want the cost or the mess but this bathroom was so boring and dated I needed to do something!

Get out Your Clipboard and Get Inspired with Some of These Ideas:

Start by writing a few issues down. Get a clipboard or whatever you have handy and stand in your bathroom and write down the things that bother you. Create a checklist and work your way down with these questions:

Wall Colour? – do you prefer bright or dark colours

Sink Clutter? – do you struggle with sink clutter in the mornings or anytime when getting ready.

Storage? – Can you store toilet supplies and linens in the bathroom?

Lighting? – Can you see to do your makeup or whatever?

Flooring?  – Is the floor in good shape?  Colour?

Mirror? – Has yours seen better days?  Is it a medicine chest for storage? Or Just a plain mirror?

Tub/Shower? – Is the grout discoloured?  Is the area overflowing with your products?

Renter? – Do you want to personalize this space without any injury to walls as you are a tenant?

Small Bathroom Fixes

Start with the list of questions above, and you are likely to come up with a good list of the things that bother you the most.  Not only do you want a nice bathroom for cheap, you want things to run smoothly while in there.
My bathroom didn’t have storage so if you were in there and you ran out of toilet paper it was down the hall in the closet!  Not a good scenario!  Things for this small space should stay in this space if at all possible.

Gather Your List and Now Write Down Your Budget.

Before you hit the back button with this part, you will be amazed at what you can do for even just a few dollars at the dollar store to make life a bit easier in this room.
If you have to break this down into manageable bites, like I did, then making a list is a great place to start.  It gets you in the frame of mind to do something with this room, instead of simply thinking these thoughts every time you use this room and then forgetting about them when you leave.

Question 1 – Wall Color

Paint is the cheapest and quickest way to change the look of a small bathroom.  Even the tiniest of spaces can look totally different with a good coat of paint.  Head to the hardware store and get some colour chips to see which would look best.  Keep the ceiling white to open up the space.  You can get environmentally friendly paints specifically designed for this room.  Get a gallon tin, as you will want to put on a couple of coats.

You can paint this room for under 100 dollars even cheaper depending on the size and how much wall space you have to paint.

This alone might be all you need to do to change it.  Don’t forget topatch any little holes dents first.   Bathrooms can be a bit awkward to paint as you need to get around fixtures, so be patient.  But paint dries fast.  If you are tenant, talk to your landlord first.  They are usually OK with any improvements.

Question 2 – Sink Clutter

If you have a vanity, it may be simple task of using a vanity storage system such as this carousel that houses way more than it looks.  This gets smaller items off the surface and corals them in an orderly fashion.  You know your bathroom personality, so find one that is easy to use.  If not you can get dollars store tiny baskets that will work too.

Over the sink shelves, allow you to utilize this space.  In a tiny bathroom you need to make every square inch work.  These are another awesome way to get things off the surface.  You could use one of these and the carousel idea to deal with your clutter.
Old mason jars can also be used to create storage and look awesome on the wall if you have the space.  Check out instructions for mason jar storageideas and crafts.

Question 3 – Storage

If you have a pedestal sink, you are suffering from lack of storage options.  As pretty as a pedestal sink is, it is awkward if this is a main bathroom.   Here is a totally quick fix for storage in this small space.

Pedestal Sink Storage Cabinet! – Yes, these are super awesome and they do not require construction or destruction.  They simply work with your sink and slide right in.  Instant storage.  You can get these online… check them out!  Quick and easy way to create instant space for towels, toiletries and more and these are landlord friendly, can be taken with you and look good.
At only 5.5 inches wide, you can really utilize that space between the toilet and the wall!

I was amazed that there was such a thing until I was researching my own small bathroom décor ideas.  Perfect place to store toilet paper etc., if you purchase a pedestal storage cabinet and a beside the toilet storage you will have solved a lot of problems in your small bathroom.  Once again renter friendly.

Question 4 – Lighting.

You could try to renovate the present fixture with new shades or brighter bulbs, but you can also get some really awesome looking vanity fixtures online.  I personally love the industrial look, and I found this site that covers industrial lighting with the Edison style bulbs for a real authentic look.  Check it out.  Here are some examples.

Small Bathroom Ideas DIY

I find that sometimes just the paint, and the light fixtures can totally change the look on the cheap. I personally have not be able to find the huge assortment of light fixtures that I like in my local lighting store. If you want something different, take a look online with Amazon.

Question 5 – Flooring

We can’t all afford to rip it out and start over, but you can maybe cover it up?  Invest in some really cool eye catching bathroom floor mats that will take your eye away from the old flooring beneath.
Question 6 -  Mirrors!

Plain or fancy, these definitely spruce up a wall.  A larger mirror will give the illusion of more space.  Plus with the right lighting you can see properly without casting shadows, which can make a small bathroom seem dingy and uninviting.

You can get creative and find an old large picture frame from the thrift store and decorate it and then add a mirror.  Or you can take the present mirror and spruce up the frame.  I took a dated mirror with a gold frame around it and taped off the glass and then painted the gold with black acrylic paint.  It really updated it and saved me a bundle. These are definitely small bathroom fixes that work like a charm.  If you don't want to renovate your own mirror, check out this page of mirrors for ideas and prices.

Question 7 – Tub/Shower?

If it has seen better days, but you can’t afford to rip it all out, think outside the box.  I my house the old tiles looked really dated and old because the grout had discoloured over the years.  I purchased a kit that brightens the grout.  Worked like a charm.
Start by give the tiles a super good clean with CLR or some kind of grime remover and then follow the instructions for the instant grout brightener.  Now the tiles look good.

Small bathroom designs with tub or shower must incorporate a place for everything such as soap, shampoo etc.  If you have a few people using this room, it can get crowded with products.
These instant shelves create lots of storage room in the shower or tub for all the family products.  Also makes cleaning much easier.

Start with the floor to ceiling instant corner shelves for tubs or showers, or the shower curtain storage idea.  I thought this was really cool with all the pockets.  This gets everything off the floor making it easier to clean as well as feel organized.

Small Bathroom Ideas Rental

There are so many portable options to add to this small space that you don’t even touch the walls.  If you want to paint then ask the landlord, but chances are the walls are pretty neutral at present, so with a few portable fixtures and fresh colorful linens you can personalize this space and still take it all with you when you move.

Portable storage options such as the pedestal sink cabinet on wheels, beside the toilet storage, and some spring loaded shower/tub accessories and you will not have done any harm to the rental space but at least it will feel more like your own.

Small Bathroom Décor Ideas – the DIY way on the Cheap

I hope this article has inspired you to think outside the box especially if you are watching your budget like me.

I figured I had to work with what was there. I originally thought well no point in doing any DIY until we save up to rip it apart, but I realized you have to live with it right now, why not invest in a few little pieces that can make this space inviting and more useful.

Utilizing wasted space with these really cool ideas is the key. Look online to get ideas. Amazon is a great place to start. Turn a small bathroom into a cool space and enjoy!

Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock Tent

The Spreader Bar System Keeps the bed flatter

I have been researching many different camping hammocks especially for backpacking, and have found this brand to be the only one with the unique bed system.  If you are not one for being cocooned or banana shaped without support and prefer something a little flatter but love the idea of being off the ground, this will work.

Lawson Backpacking Hammock Tent - Weighs 4.5 pounds!

This one also includes a rain fly to keep you dry and it attaches to the tent part so that you are not attaching so many things to the trees or hammering stakes in the ground.  But the best part is that it can also be used as a quick tent on the ground, which is handy for hiking in areas without large trees or on the beach.

What Makes this one Different?

  • can be used as a tent on the ground as well as a hammock
  • lightweight - 4.5 pounds, perfect for backpacking and takes up very little room
  • easy to put up
  • spreader bar system keeps the bed part flatter  - 90" x 42" (this is a big bonus for me!)
  • can quickly convert to a simple lounging hammock
  • award winning
  • no more cocooning or banana forming  - comfy after a days hike
  • tree friendly
  • environmentally approved as you don't disturb the undergrowth.
  • best price!

Using a Camping Hammock Tent

Anyone who loves back backing with minimal supplies and also loves to hike rough terrains, will have been introduced to the idea of being off the ground for the night.  They strap between two sturdy trees and you stay warmer and dryer and they are easy to set up.

The Lawson Blue Ridge takes this a step further with the built in suspension system to allow a flatter bed but still be off the ground.  But the best part about this particular hammock is that it can also be used as a tent on the ground

Best Camping Hammock

There are so many different ones on the market and so many prices, but as a consumer I want one that will support my back better than most.  I wanted something that had the "width" room when I got into it and something that could take over 200 pounds and affordable.

Get Rid of Excess Weight when Backpacking

By using ones of these camping hammocks, you can instantly get rid of the air mattress, sleeping bag, pillow and more.  Instantly make your backpack lighter and leave less of a foot print on the undergrowth.  These hammocks are also tree friendly with straps to not leave marks or injure the trees.

Worth the investment and Lawson Blue Ridge camping hammock is the best on the market.

Getting Back to Nature with Camping and Backpacking and Less Weight to Carry!

I always loved the idea of camping or hiking, but the amount of stuff you had to bring with you always put me off.  The packing and the lugging of everything to the camp sites put me off.  But after watching my son pack for a week of hiking through Algonquin Park in Ontario (which is quite rugged and remote) with everything on his back, I was inspired to try it.

The tent and everything associated with sleeping on the ground took up the most room in his pack, so having one of these camping hammocks would get rid of some weight.

Something to consider... There are so many cool gadgets now for camping that are lightweight and dependable.  Check  out my Must Have Camping Gadgets for more fun ideas to enjoy camping and hiking in comfort.

So get your body off the ground in comfort and no more worries about rocks and ruts and roots and enjoy your hiking and camping just like when you were a kid with the Lawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock Tent

Avoiding Earplugs or Ear buds? - Prefer Over Ear Headphones?

I personally just cannot wear earplugs or ear buds, they start to irritate me no matter how soft they are.  I see so many people with ear buds and just can't imagine being able to hear the music or their cell phone call with all the noise around them.  I personally am looking for over ear noise cancelling headphones under 100 dollars, and the above are the best from my research.

The price is awesome..... check the current price!

Comfort is the name of the game when it comes to over ear headphones.  The padding makes them comfortable to wear, and you can cancel out all that extra noise that maybe stops your from studying, reading, or napping.  I plan on wearing mine in bed as my hubby snores.  With the noise cancelling feature and some soft music I should drift off no problem.

If you are still not convinced of the quality of the Cowin E-7 Active Noise Cancelling headphones, then simply compare them to others:

You want deep powerful sound that feels like soft pillows on your ears and head.  Over the ear headphones are the best for anyone with sensitive ears or anyone who seriously just wants to concentrate on their crisper music without outside interference or that call or even just simply peace and quiet to have a nap or de-stress, which can be hard in a noisy environment.

When I had researched these a few years ago, they were quite expensive, and a luxury I just couldn't afford, but now with newer technology, you can get a lot for less.

There are many reviews of happy people and these would also make a great gift idea for anyone who would just like to get a way a bit without leaving the busy room, to listen to music, take a call, or simply get peace and quiet.  You can leave the room without really leaving for under 100 dollars.  Now that is a awesome deal!

Best BBQ Gazebo - Stay Sheltered Under a Grilling Gazebo

I don't know about you, but where I live the winters can be long and cold, but as soon as the spring arrives, we simply can't wait to spend all our free time outdoors.

But outdoor living can get expensive when it comes to fancy accessories.  As I watched my hubby bbq holding an umbrella after unexpected rain, I started my research into the best grilling gazebo for the buck.

Top 3 Grilling Gazebos

Best Reviews!!

For the price, I found this model to be the first with super reviews!  It has lots of hooks to hang your grilling utensils, and shelves to hold your plates and supplies.  The roof is slanted to let the weather roll off, and it looks good!

LED lights so you can grill at night time, which we love to do.  This keeps the weather and hot sun off the chef  and this way the bbq is not taking up room under your porch, gazebo or yard.  It creates the look of a station.  It is durable and steady.

✅   Palm Springs Deluxe BBQ Gazebo

This Palm Springs is a bit cheaper, but I didn't see any lighting.

✅   Abba Backyard BBQ Grill Gazebo

The Abba is more of an investment as it has a steel canopy rather than a tent style roof.  I believe you would leave this out all year round.

The above three after much research are my picks based on quality, price and reviews.  But since my budget is a little maxed out, my choice would be the first one as it has everything I need including lights.

Lights are super important to me, and the fact these are built in and come with the Sunjoy model works for me.

The Abba would be the model I would eventually like to get as it is robust and more of a permanent structure.

Keep Your Barbecue Area Separate

I love the idea of having shelter over the cook as well as any food preparation.  Even if you are eating inside, it is nice to have a sheltered space for the chef.

Keeping the cooking area separate allows more room in your gazebo or on your patio for your guests, but if the cook loves to talk and work, you can get outdoor bar stools that would look nice around this bbq gazebo so your guests can enjoy your company while you cook them dinner.

After last night seeing my hubby balancing an umbrella over himself and the grill while cooking us hamburgers, I think a grilling gazebo is the next purchase.

Budget Backyard and a Cheap Gazebo

If like me you are trying to purchase the comforts for outdoor living while watching your budget, also check out cheap gazebos, I have found many under 200 bucks.

Canopy Weight Bags

✅   Canopy Weight Bags for Instant Legs

If You can screw the legs down on your grilling gazebo or any gazebo for that matter, then you can keep it safe and sound, but if you prefer to set this up on your patio and don't want to attach it permanently, then you will need to invest in these bags that fit perfectly around the legs of your structures.

That is the only problem with any of these structures, if you want them to remain in your backyard or wherever you are using them, you need to tie them down either by screwing them to the deck or patio or using these specially designed weight bags.

You don't want your structure to end up in your neighbours pool after that next storm!

Cheap Gazebos - Under 200 Dollars!

Gazebos are a quick and elegant way to add cover and shade to your yard.  I love the idea of one of these on my patio, but man do they get expensive!!  I wanted one with the curtain sides for the evenings, and this is what I have found so far under 200 bucks with decent reviews:

Top Three Styles:

  ✅   Mosaic 13 x 13 pop up Gazebo

Saving money in the yard is not too hard if you look online.  I have been researching these extensively as I can't afford super fancy ones, I need cheap gazebos in price only but still want a quality product.

This so far has turned out to be the best for the money.  Click the title or the picture.

Portable - I also wanted one that was more portable, and this one comes with a carry case on wheels, making it much easier to tote around.

✅   Instant Canopy/Gazebo

Canopy Style Gazebo - If you want something super portable and don't need sides (as traditional gazebos have), this one folds up like an accordion quickly.  It is even cheaper than the first example and great to keep sun off food or for event sales such as outdoor craft shows.  You could get one of these and purchase netting separately if you want sides

  10 x 30 Outdoor Canopy Gazebo

Event or Party Gazebo - It can be hard to find something this big for under 200 dollars, but it can be found online.  Click the picture or the link to see it.

This is 10 x 30 and could house that next backyard picnic, or take it to a park.  This keeps the sun and bugs out.  This comes with full sides.

Some of these gazebos can get pretty expensive.  I personally was researching these 3 items, and these were the cheapest gazebos I could find with some good qualities.   When I looked in the local hardware stores and garden centers, they were very expensive.  I don't need one with all the bells and whistles, just plain and basic.

Portability

For me this is the most important.  If you want something more permanents, you may have to pay a little more, but the above 3 pretty much fit the bill when it comes to cheap, affordable gazebos that will work in your backyard, patio, craft shows, or at the park.

You could quickly put up the event sized tent in a park if you are planning a family get together, because mosquitoes can end a party pretty quickly.  If you have the room in your own yard, it is a great way to extend the evening, just add some gazebo lights and you are set and safe from the bugs too.

Or Net Your Present Patio Table and Umbrella Set

If you don't want to invest in a cheap gazebo, but presently own a typical patio table with umbrella, I came across another awesome affordable way to keep the bugs out and extend your evening!

                               ✅   Umbrella Patio Screen Set

This patio screen set will simply go over your present umbrella and table, allowing you to spend more time outdoors even when the bugs are out.  I live in an area where the mosquitoes are just waiting to attack as soon as that sun starts to set, and that is the best time for hanging outdoors.

Cheap Gazebos for Sale

I really didn't think I would find much for under 200 dollars, but after research the best prices were online.  Many offer free delivery and are easy to set up.

I have been trying to set up my yard on a budget, and after a long cold winter, it is super nice to be able to spend as much time outdoors as possible.  I need some accessories to do this, but my budget is tight.   I am willing to take it down for the winter, I don't want permanent.  I move a lot and simply want some comfort outdoors.

This means for me, the cheapest gazebos are the best.  But I am also considering this patio netting set for even more seating.

Don't Forget Some Gazebo Weights

Unless you plan on anchoring the legs into the grass, you will need some kind of weights to keep your gazebo from going to la la land in a storm.  You can purchase specially designed weights that you wont be tripping over online.

Enjoy setting up your yard, or park or where ever you want to spend more time.  Enjoy the day and the evenings while keeping some money in your pocket.

How to Make a Fairy Mason Jar Candle - Awesome Ambient Lighting - Great for Patio

I have always loved DIY and any type of arts and crafts, but I really enjoyed creating this mason jar candle fairy light and I hope you do too!

It all started when I was cleaning out my kitchen and came across an empty mason jar.  I was about to toss in recycling but realized it was in perfect shape with the lid, and just couldn’t do it.  So even though I was trying to be ruthless and get organized, it went into the “keeper” pile.

I googled some craft ideas, and came across this cool video on You Tube to create a pretty simple fairy mason jar candle holder.  These are perfect to sit on the patio table at night or use for some calming ambiance lighting indoors.  You use a battery flicker candle so no worries about fire.

I found the remaining supplies I needed online so check out the video.  This has inspired me to also try cutouts of cityscapes and try different themes.

DIY Mason Jar Candles – Hope you are Inspired?

I followed the video to a point.  I found black fairy cutouts already available online but you can cut out your own fairy if you want but there is a lot of detail to cut out.  I also simply used glue stick to stick it to the sides of the glass.  I also just happened to have some faux mossy stuff from Christmas decorations, but you can go very simple with this craft or super involved.  You could plaster fairies all over the glass.
Homemory Realistic and Bright Flickering Bulb Battery Operated Flameless LED Tea Light for Seasonal & Festival Celebration, Pack of 12, Electric Fake Candle in Warm White and Wave Open

Creative Embellishments Scrapbook Laser Cut Chipboard Fairies Mega Pack 22 pieces (Black)

Super Moss 26912 Spanish Moss Preserved, Grass, 8oz (200 cubic inch)

Liquitex BASICS Acrylic Paint 8.45-oz tube, Titanium White

Ball Pint Regular Mouth Jars and Lids BPA Free, 16 oz, Set of 12

These were my steps:

Step 1 – Pour some white acrylic paint into the bottom of the jar

Step 2 - Take a brush and swirl it around all over the sides and bottom of the glass.  The white paint helps to mute the light so it creates beautiful shadows.

Step 3 – Let it air dry for a day or so.

Step 4 – Place your faux grass or moss or whatever material you wish to use into the bottom for a couple of inches

Step 5 – Glue your figures to the glass as if sitting on the moss material with glue stick.  Add other items if you wish such as fake leaves.

Step 6 – Place a battery operated flickering candle into the middle of the moss.  This is why it is good to have a thick layer of your moss or grass material in the bottom so that you can reach the candle to turn off and on easily.

Step 7 – Decorate the lid if you wish.  I just painted mine black.

Have a Few Made for Great Outdoor Patio Ambiance

I truly love the soft warm flickering glow these lights give off.  The painted glass helps to soften the lighting and creates the really awesome shadows from the fairies you have glued to the sides.

You can use different sizes of mason jars in a grouping to really add the beauty of flickering candles without the actual flame.

It is important to get the flickering battery candles to really create the look.  You can get these in packages online and they last a super long time.  By day these mason jars just look like pretty white jars, what a surprise when you turn them on in the dark.

You can go beyond Fairies

I also have a craft page of other awesome uses and ideas for mason jar crafts.

I was thinking creating a cityscape of buildings with the windows cut out would look cool, or detail trees.

Gets your imagination going, and there are all kinds of ideas going through my head.  But watch the video, order your supplies and get creative!

How to Clean Yellowed Pillows

When changing my bedding, I started to notice the "yellowing" on my pillows when I took off the pillow cases. It turns out it is ...
