AA Battery Tester - Also 9 Volt/C/D/AAA and Button Types - Find the Ones that Work Quickly with a Battery Checker

I don't know about you, but we have so many things that need some kind of AA battery in our house it is becoming a pain knowing which ones are still good.

Small flashlights, computer mouse, cameras and the TV remote all seem to take the common AA in our house.  I am not sure how, but many end up in baskets, on the counter or in that infamous junk drawer, so I decided it was time to find out if they were keepers or tossers!

I was researching and found this cool little battery tester online:

It has a easy to read display, to let you know if they are dead or half dead or totally OK.  (obviously it doesn't use those words but you get the point).

I am sad to say I no longer have rechargeable batteries, so mine get saved for the twice a year battery collection that our township does to keep them out of the landfill.  But for anyone who uses rechargeables, this will tell you if they need recharging too.

This has got to be one of the cheapest investments ever!

I am on a spring cleanup of my junk drawer, and I need to be prepared for that next battery collection
date, so I am going to check each one.

It is such a time waster checking different batteries in a flashlight or the TV remote with everyone waiting to get back to that movie.  I want to know which ones are good and which ones are bad.

This Amprobe Battery Tester has absolutely loads of reviews, over 3700 at time of writing this post.  It is under 10 bucks now, so next time you are placing an order on Amazon, don't forget to add one of these to your order, then do what I am doing, check them all quickly.

Old Batteries Can Be Dangerous

After a while acid type stuff will leak out of them, or the tops will get this white crusty stuff on it which is really bad on the skin.  Once a battery has served its purpose, it needs to either be recharged or recycled properly.  Don't just toss them in the garbage.

Many local landfill and recycling facilities will have a bin designated for dead batteries, and some home improvement stores will have them too.   But if you find that awkward, or too far away and want to be environmentally responsible, you can get these battery recycling kits online.

Battery Recycling Kit

The price includes return postage for your dead batteries. You can simply test them and then collect them in this safe pail instead of a plastic bag like I do!

Create a Container for Dead Batteries and Make it a Habit to Test and Toss

With so many toys and electronics taking some kind of battery you are bound to have a few laying around the house.  They are not cheap to buy so it would be nice to know if the ones sitting around are any good rather than waiting until you need a replacement instantly.

I realized just how mine collected around the house.  Most of the computer mouse's (are they considered mice in plural??) require only one battery and most battery packs are sold in at least two.  The package would be ripped open and the other one would eventually fall out or simply be left on a coffee table, desk or tossed in a drawer.

My CSI skills finally figured it all out as the family all looked totally innocently at me and shrugged their shoulders!

I keep a Basket Just with Good Batteries

So now the deal is, when you open a package, the package or at least the other battery will end up in this basket.  We know the ones in here are good to go.

When taking out the old one, we will now have a pail or container, not sure yet.  Either way I don't want that frustration of the dead mixed in with the living ones!

This Tester is the First Step!

I also discovered that if you are in need of battery power, especially the most common AA's you can get them online in bulk!

Which is much cheaper than the electronic stores around me.

So, if like me, you have lots of battery power in your home, then you should try and create some kind of system to separate the good from the bad, test them to figure out which ones are what, and when you do need them, get them in bulk online.

This is a much cheaper option.  This way when the troups are freaking because the TV remote died or that latest toy died, you are prepared!

Have a wonderful day!

Vertical Wall Garden - Balcony Gardening or Living Walls - Enjoy Plants by Using Walls in a Small Space

If you have downsized, or rent then you know that either...

1.  There is no floor space for plants or gardens and...

2.  The landlord says no to digging up the yard.

But there are ways to enjoy greenery and veggies by utilizing the walls.  Whether inside or out you can still have a garden space.

Balcony Vegetable Garden

If you have a balcony in your rental or condo or even just a tiny patio space, you can utilize the outdoor walls or railings to grow veggies.

Thinking outside the box and researching a few ideas I came across these products that would help grow an awesome veggie garden by using the wall space or inside the railing.

This one has 36 self watering pockets that you could attach to the inside of the balcony railing or on the wall.  As long as you can get some daylight you can grow veggies.

In a small space or apartment you can take advantage of wall space and keep your floor space open.  Creating a living wall is the perfect way to grow veggies or flowers or whatever you wish.

12 Pocket Vertical Wall Planter

This one is made in the USA from recycled nylon felt and is super lightweight.  It has tabs so you could slip it onto a rail or any kind of hanging system.  This would be perfect for the inside of balcony railings.

It can act as privacy for your balcony and it can grow veggies or flowers.  Creating a living wall with these pockets is a wonderful way to dress up your space and keep your floor space open.

Hanging Flower Pouches

If you want to also grow pretty flowers and really brighten up your balcony railing or walls, you can hang these pouches on the inside of the balcony or railing and enjoy a beautiful flower garden without any pots on the floor.

There is plenty of vertical space to secure an area for your fresh veggies and herbs and then also allow room for your pretty flowers and you can create an awesome oasis on your patio or balcony without using any floor space at all.

As you can see this bag can hang on the railing on the inside to create not only beautiful flowers but create privacy as well.  Best of both worlds.

Beautiful Wall Air Plants

If you goal is to simply dress up a wall either inside your home or out on the balcony or back patio, you can use these really cool air plants, that don't need soil.

Depending on your climate you can create a living wall or terrarium using air plants such as the ones pictures.

These would look awesome inside or outside if the air temperature is suitable.  Definitely would dress up a balcony wall or fence.

                                            Tillandsia Air Plant Kit

After much research I found that you can get these air plants online in a kit.  This kit includes 11 plants and one bottle of special fertilizer.

Tillandsia's are powerful air cleaners as well as beautiful  You can arrange them in an artistic way and many people refer to them as living art.

They only need watering once a week and don't require any soil, so you can display them in a grouping to get the best effect on the wall.  This is definitely wall gardening!

Vertical wall gardening doesn't have to be just vegetables, it can be gorgeous flowers, or air plants, or anything you want.

Why just hang pictures when you can create living walls?

Plants are so good for air quality, and what better place to use them then on the wall. Vertical wall gardening has taken off especially with many people downsizing or not wanting the back breaking work or tilling and weeding a conventional garden.

You can create an awesome oasis of fresh herbs and veggies, flowers and greenery that can help de-stress you from your day.

Don't forget to consider the walls when it comes to your garden.  Veggies can grow in pockets of soil, they don't have to have huge land areas.  Imagine just picking fresh tomatoes off your balcony?

I hope I have got you as inspired as I am to get utilizing those blank walls outdoors and indoors.

DIY Vertical Garden Wall

You can get pretty creative when it comes to hanging plants.  As you can see in this picture hanging hooks close to the wall and then hooking one plant to another is another option when it comes to vertical gardening.

Raised Garden Bed Kits - Create the Perfect Renter Friendly Vegetable Garden - No Matter How Small Your Space

If you are a renter, but would really love to grow your own veggies, then consider some of these raised garden kit ideas.

You can make your own, but as I was researching ways to turn my patio into a haven and a veggie garden I came across these products online.

Growing Garden Ideas for Renters

If your landlord doesn't want the yard dug up, then you can use one of these raised planter beds.  If you rent and have a balcony, you can sit these in the corners to grow foods, herbs or even just flowers.

Being raised not only makes them easier to work with ie:  no kneeling pads required!, but you can control the soil, weeds and any mess.

Vegetables grow in the perfect environment.  The added bonus, is that you don't cause any damage and you can simply take these with you when you move.  This cedar raised garden bed kit, goes together fast and you can garden from a chair and really watch them grow.

Elevated Planter Box Kit

This one would require a little more room, but you could grow a lot of smaller veggies and herbs in this one on the balcony or sit it on the patio or a table top to raise it to your comfort level.

This has 3 tiers and you can separate out your veggies.  Cedar is the perfect material as it doesn't rot, smells nice and looks good.  These are ideal for balcony or patio gardening.

Planter Bag

This is a different style of gardening and works awesome for root veggies such as potatoes, beets etc.  As you you see you have access to the roots without having to haul out the entire plant.

These can be grouped together on a balcony or patio.  Just don't put them on the grass or they will leave dead areas.  If you are trying to be renter friendly, and you have a yard, keep the raised garden boxes or bags on the patio or deck or even the front porch.

Having them near the door on the balcony or patio makes it easy to just nip outside and grab some fresh ingredients for dinner.

Larger 2 Foot by 8 Foot Cedar Raised Garden Bed

If you have the room, I love the idea that it is long and not so deep.  You could actually fence off part of your patio or use it as a patio privacy idea as well.

Create a living wall with your cedar raised garden bed kit.  As you can see in the picture, this can hold a lot of veggie plants.  It is much easier to maintain without bending or kneeling.

Easier to weed as weeds don't tend to migrate from other areas of the garden with then are in garden boxes.

Place against your railing on a balcony and it will not only provide you with fresh food, but look awesome and green when sitting outside.  Enjoy the fresh fragrance of growing tomatoes, or herbs.

Growing your very own fresh veggies doesn't have to be a no no just because you are renting.  The above product prove that even if you only have a corner or balcony or patio or porch you can grow food or flowers without harm to your landlord's property.

Raised garden boxes, are easier on the back.  This is a form of vertical gardening that has become very popular as many people are downsizing their properties or renting.  You can get creative with growing everything from vegetables to gorgeous flowers without back breaking work.

Smaller Plants Such as Strawberries and Herbs

If you simply want to grow herbs or strawberries, then something like this 5 tier planter that would sit nicely on a patio or balcony would work well.

I have been on Both Sides of the Fence - Rented and Owned and Still Love the Idea of Container Gardening.

I love flowering shrubs and bushes, and don't want to take up my tiny semi-detached yard with a veggie garden even though I do love the idea of growing my own food.

Using raised garden bed kits or containers that take up the vertical space is the ideal way to preserve whatever yard you do have for other things.

Keeping Veggies Close to the House with Deter Critters

Keeping a raised veggie garden in containers close to the door will deter critters compared to the back of the yard.

The veggie garden doesn't have to be that unsightly spot that you wall off.

Get creative and make it a focal point on your patio or balcony, or patio privacy idea and enjoy!

Using this 4 foot vertical planter as you can see in the picture would not only grown veggies, herbs or flowers, you could use it as a living privacy fence on a balcony or patio.

Create your own little oasis of privacy and greenery while at the same time growing your own food.

I figure I could grow quite a bit with the tomato style planter above and then this 4 foot vertical raised garden bed for herbs and the strawberry planter for my berries.

Using vertical space allows you to utilize small rental spaces to the max without damage to property.

So, if you rent, don't let that deter you!  You can still enjoy a garden and fresh veggies.  I found the best place for most of these products was online.  My local garden center simply didn't have the raised garden boxes or kits, but they had the seeds.  So I will get the kits online and the seeds and plants at the garden center.  My patio will be in full growth this year!

Patio Privacy - How to Make Your Patio Private for Renters - 8 Outdoor Privacy Ideas

If you rent, then you don't want to do any permanent DIY, you have to get creative on the patio, porch, deck or balcony.

But there are ways to create the ideal living space outdoors yet in privacy.  Below are some patio privacy ideas that will create the outdoor private room you are looking for.  Some are more of an investment that others, but keep in mind you can take them with you when you move!

1.  Vertical Gardens - Portable - My Favorite Idea!!

You can create an instant fence or barrier between you and the neighbors by breaking up the space with beautiful flowers and maybe even grow a few of your own veggies.

Invest in a few to create a living fence that you can place side by side and fill with fast growing annuals to not only add some private space but to add color too!  They can come with you when you move.

2. Outdoor Curtain Rod Free Standing Frame

This is perfect to create your own space on one side of the patio.  This is a stand alone frame, doesn't require any drilling or staking.  Simply stand it up and add some outdoor curtains. Outdoor curtains should be made out of waterproof or water resistant fabrics so they can simply be left outside. This type of curtain dries very quickly, but can give you that privacy you need from neighbors. Once again you can simply take the portable curtain rod frame apart and take it with you along with the curtain panel. No damage done to the rental patio space.

3.  Gazebo

This is a bit more of an investment but can be erected on a patio, most come complete with curtain sides to create that privacy you want as well as protect from sunlight, create shade and allow for more time outdoors with protection from mosquitoes.

My tenant had one of these and put it right up close to the patio doors so she could leave them open and then screened sides on the gazebo stopped bugs coming into the house.  She created a private dining area out in the gazebo for the warm weather months.

It gave the illusion of more space.  In Ontario we spend a lot of time indoors with the cold winters, so it is nice when we can migrate outside.

Use the Gazebo Weights for Patio or Driveway Use

These weights will hold the 4 corners down so no worries about wind taking off with your gazebo

4.  Balcony Privacy Screen

If you have a fenced patio or you rent an apartment with a balcony, it can be nice to create separation without losing out on the warm breezes.

These screens simply fit on the fence or railing and will create that private room.

5. Garden Screen Trellis

This can be anything from your own DIY trellis to fancy wrought iron ones.  If your patio is on flat ground surrounded by yard, you could simply tap this into the ground at the edge of the patio and then place planters in front of it and plat with fast growing flowers or vines.

When you leave you can take it with you.  This way you don't actually plant anything in the ground, just in the pots in front of it.

Outdoor Privacy Ideas - Don't have to be Expensive

Creating any kind of break in the space such as you would get with living fences, such as large potted plants, especially tall leafy ones will give you the sense of your own space.

You can invest in items such as the above examples and totally change the look of your space without hurting one hair of your landlords property.  It can create an awesome space while you are living there and then when you move it can all come with you.

6.  Thrift Store Finds

Pots for plants can get expensive, so check the thrift stores and garage sales for large pots you can fill with gorgeous annual plants.  Annuals grow the fastest and will give you that private area you want.

Fill the base of larger pots with stones or gravel then the top 3rd soil so as not to spend too much on potting soil.

Arrange many different pots along one side of the patio or deck to create a living wall and keep you out of direct view when sitting and enjoying time outdoors.  There is a time and place for neighbor interaction, but sometimes you just want to enjoy the outdoors without interacting with anyone!

Find some old Window Shutters and hinge them together to create a privacy screen..

7.  Modular Planter Systems

I came across this cool set of planters that click together and can stack.  This would be a great way to break up that open space and if you plant the right flowers you could totally create a nice looking green living wall instead of an ugly fence.

There are many products online that would work well depending on your patio space and budget.  I love to find deals, but also looking online can give you lots of cool ideas.

You might as well enjoy the flowers while creating your private space!

8.  Planter Trellis

This planter box on wheels, also has a trellis that can work as a temporary fence while plants are growing.  Choose fast growing annuals or vines, to quickly fill the trellis space with flowers and greenery.

No matter the size of your patio, you could even just create privacy in one corner if you can't afford to close in the entire patio or deck.  Even just a corner that is just for you will work well by using elevated planters or a planter box trellis on wheels such as this one.

You can then move it around to all parts of the patio if you wish and it can roll right into a moving truck when you leave.

Removable Flooring - Removable Floor Tiles for Renters or Homeowners on the Cheap

If you are looking for a quick way to cover old flooring without digging it up or huge expense, removable vinyl tiles or planks is the way to go.

The only way to make them removable is to use double sided carpet tape.  This is the only way you can take them back up again with no residue when you move.  Do not peel and stick or use any glues.

You can get these vinyl tiles or the wood like planks online and I have to tell you, this is a very easy way to transform a worn out ugly floor.

If you are a renter, you don't have to put up with an ugly floor just because your landlord won't change it especially in the kitchen.  This is where some of the worst flooring tends to live.  Old beat up tiles, or wood that has lost its finish and is pretty ugly.

How to Install Removable Vinyl Tiles or Planks in this Case

Step 1 - Make sure the present old floor is clean, no crumbs or bits to interfere with new tiles.

Step 2 - Create a grid using double sided carpet tape.  The beauty of this tape is that it will hold the vinyl tiles in place but can be removed and will leave no residue.  Perfect for renters!

You may need a few rolls of this, but still a cheap investment.  Don't use any glues just make this grid on the floor.  Check out the video below:

Step 3 - Only peel back the tape covering as you go so you don't get dirt on exposed tape as you can see in this video.

Step 4 - ENJOY!

Removable Flooring

This is the way to go especially if you are a renter, but a homeowner can also use this route to temporarily cover old wood or tiled floors if the budget says NO to a complete gut and replace.  You can also use click together floors such as laminate, but they can cost a fair bit more and the vinyl works well in the kitchen, which is usually where the worst floor covering lives.

Redoing a Room on a Budget - Can Be Done!

Anyone who reads my blog will note that my goal is to find things and ways to create a life that doesn't break the bank or requires serious DIY.  The more I can do myself the better.

Online is where I go especially Amazon, to find awesome and affordable products for any projects I am considering.

Read some of my latest posts on redoing rooms on a budget simply by covering or hiding.

Best way to cover popcorn ceiling, or  How to make cheap canvas wall art, perfect for covering or hiding bad walls.  How to Decorate unfinished basement walls so you can enjoy your basement space without DIY.  How to hide bad walls without paint and then simply cheap wall coverings to hide bad walls to quickly create a space you can enjoy right away.

Hide a bad wall, cover the popcorn ceiling and add some removable vinyl tiles and the whole room is transformed for much less than a gut reno.

Enjoy the Space NOW Don't wait for that Magical Day when your Wallet Says "I can afford a gut reno today"

So many people will live with ugly rooms until that magical day when they can "afford a gut reno" which never seems to happen.  So why not work with it and enjoy it now?  There are so many cool and awesome products on the market now that can help you create a space with your stamp on it without tearing it apart.

Best Way to Cover Popcorn Ceiling - No Mess - No Scraping - Awesome and on the Cheap

If you have been blessed with a popcorn ceiling (like me) and don't like it (like me) or maybe the
ceiling is not popcorn or stucco but the seams are showing and the ceiling drywall job was not done well.  I have news for you...

Stop Living with a Ugly Popcorn Ceiling!

Anyone who reads my blog, knows I go for the easiest, cheapest options that still look good for everyday life, and I came across these lightweight styrofoam ceiling tiles that simply glue to the ceiling.

Finish it off with a crown molding and it looks brand new with not one speck of dust or sanding!

These are paintable if you don't like the plain look, but I love the light white pattern and if you watch the video you can see just how lightweight and easy they are to install.  You don't have to paint a thing if you don't want to.

Below is a video of them being installed on the ceiling. Yes your arms have to go over your head, but you could take breaks and maybe have some help, but you could do this yourself in an afternoon if the room is not too big. Plus they cut with a knife, if you have to cut them to fit.

There is no preparation to the surface, you don't have to sand or remove anything.  That is the part I love.

If you are creative you can give them a faux look such as tin if you have an older home where this would work, but you can also get them already painted online.

As you can see by the ads, you can get this on Amazon for a good price. I just love the idea of not scrapping or adding an extra 1/4 inch of drywall which is what the home improvement store suggested. This would require me to hire someone, and guess what?  The budget says "NO".

Ideas to Cover Popcorn Ceiling

Although I feel the faux tiles are the fastest and easiest, maybe you don't like this idea.   You could cover with stretched fabric, or you can cover with faux planking.  There are many different ideas, but in my opinion this is the best way to cover popcorn ceilings on the cheap.

I say it is on the cheap because I can do this.  I don't need to hire a soul if I don't want to and I can transform a room in an afternoon and my only outlay is for the products.

Caulking to Fill Gaps Between the Wall and the Crown Molding

Don't forget to use a caulking gun to fill in any gaps to give this room a seamless beautiful look.

I love the faux crown moldings to really finish it off.  I am planning on doing this in my basement where the owner from years ago sprayed a very basic coat of stucco or popcorn and I can still see the drywall seams.

The crown moldings are a bit more expensive, you don't have to have them if you have your faux tiles come right up to the top of the wall evenly, but I personally think it finishes off the room.

Totally update a Room in an Afternoon by Covering the Popcorn Ceiling

If you really want to transform a room yourself, give your walls 2 coats of fresh paint, paint the trim, then add your new ceiling tiles and moldings, and give the floor a good clean and maybe a new area rug, and your room is totally transformed without any major DIY!  Got to Love it!

I hope I have inspired you to make some changes that look awesome without raiding your bank account and will stop you from waiting until that magical day when you have some big pile of money waiting around to do renovations!

How to Make Cheap Canvas Wall Art - Totally Personalize a Blank Wall Fast - 5 Ways

If you are renting or just purchased a home, it can be daunting staring at blank or bad walls.  But here are a few tips to fill those walls with personality and totally jazz up your place on the cheap!

1.  Fabric Wall Art on Canvas

This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to add some pizzaz and color to a wall.  Instead of just placing a canvas in the middle of the wall, try grouping them.

What you will Need:
- Cheap multipacks of Artist canvas's

I found this pack of 7 canvas's online for under 20 bucks!  You can make quite a statement with 7 of them.
- Retro Fabrics

This is a sample of one fabric I found online. You could fill the wall all the same pattern or find some others to compliment it.  Another source is your local fabric store, they quite often have remnants in bins for a good price, but not always the same cool patterns you can find online.

- Staple gun
If you don't have one already, they are a great investment and will find many uses, so worth the investment.

Method:

Place your canvas face down on the fabric and then cut around it allowing enough fabric to wrap around to the back.

Starting with the sides, stretch your fabric just enough to look flat, don't over stretch or you will end up with pulling wrinkles.

Take your staple gun and staple the fabric to the wood frame of the canvas and then do the same for the tops and the corners.  Check out the video below:

As you can see in the video, you can totally mix and match all kinds of fabrics.    Check this page of
RETRO FABRICS to see a huge selection online.

2.  How to Make Inexpensive Wall Art - Abstract Paintings

If fabrics are not your thing, then purchase multipacks of the same canvas's above and get out those paints.

You could actually get your children involved to create all kinds of amazing abstract and colorful lines, circles, and just fun things that you can then hang on the wall for cheap!

If you are trying to fill a blank wall or even to cover a bad looking wall these canvas's create that 3D effect that take your eye away from the background wall.  They don't require frames and can be hung right away.  Most canvas's are light weight, which means you don't need heavy duty hooks, just a couple of nails or use the 3M no mark hooks if you are renting.

Multi-pack of Canvas in different sizes to create some interest!

Kids can create awesome paintings, and so can you!  You don't need to be creative or artistic to spread some wonderful paint colors onto the canvas.

3.  Large Wall Art Cheap with Stencils!

Use Stencils to create patterns on canvas and group together.

4.  Wall Panels - How to Make Cheap Wall Panels

If you are more DIY inclined, you can create instant wall panels by making quick 1 by 2 inch wood  frames what ever size you want.  You can get these cut at the home improvement store to what size you want.  Staple or nail them together and then place a piece of smooth hardboard on top with nails.  You can get this hardboard at the home improvement store cut to size too.

What to Do with Large Wall Panels?

You can wall paper them, you can paint them, or you can place a peel and stick mural on them.
I found these awesome murals that are peel and stick online.  Instant photographic art for your walls!

Each one of these murals is sent to you in 6 pieces measuring 100 x 24 inches.

You could create 6 large panels with the 1 x 2 wood and the smooth hardboard surface to this size and place one panel of the mural on each panel and then hang with just a few inches in between to give an awesome 3D effect.

If the purpose is to cover a bad wall, these would do the trick.  If you rent you simply use the 3M hangers that leave no marks and these can go with you when you move.

5.  Wall Decals on Canvas

Just because they say "wall decals" doesn't mean you cant also place them onto a canvas.  If you are looking to make some wall art pop, then going for a more 3D look works best.

Using a canvas you can take word art decals and split them up among many canvas grouped together.

Add these to a canvas instead of the wall means it is much easier to simply take your wall art with you.  This is one of the quickest ways to create that cheap wall art you are looking for.

In this example, you could put Love every moment on one canvas,  then laugh every day, and live beyond words on their own canvas surface.  Group them together and you have created cheap wall art that will fill a wall or cover a bad one.

I hope I have inspired you to try a few of these ideas.  I have and they work out well.  In my case it was to hide a bad wall.  But big blank walls can also be daunting.  You don't have to spend tons of money to personalize and create an awesome space.  That is the purpose of my blog to find cheap ways to make life easier.

As you can see I shop mostly online.  This is because I find the largest variety this way, especially with fabrics.

There is more competition and I get some good prices.  The letter art above is under 5 bucks.

The canvas actually cost more than the letters, but it can make quite the impact on a canvas.

Another option is the Dollar Store.  Sometimes you can get pretty ugly art on canvas for a few bucks that you can simply cover with fabric.  Keep this in mind too!  Thinking outside the box can save you loads of money.

Also check out a few of my other posts on How to decorate unfinished basement walls or  how to hide bad walls without paint or cheap wall covering ideas for bad walls just to get some more ideas to fix up your place whether you rent or own on the cheap without looking cheap!

How to Clean Yellowed Pillows

When changing my bedding, I started to notice the "yellowing" on my pillows when I took off the pillow cases. It turns out it is ...
