Many moons ago, there were no built in closets like we have today, people used wardrobe cabinets that they moved with them. But what if your room is simply too small for a big lumping wardrobe?
No worries! There are ways to create the storage you need with a small budget.
How to Organize a Room with No Closet - Have a Raised Bed
Step 1 - Purge - Make sure everything you want to find a home for is something you will use or need. This is the opportune time to do a quick clean out. Create 3 piles, GARBAGE, DONATION
and KEEPER.
I did this before we moved. It was actually very invigorating to get rid of stuff and move lean! No point in paying a mover to move stuff you don't need or use.
Step 2 - Under the Bed Storage - Raise the Bed! - This is by far one of the easiest places to create storage. Depending on how tall your bed frame is, you can store drawers on wheels. This makes it easier to retrieve your things. We use our under bed storage instead of a dresser.
This will eliminate the need for dresser drawers which take up a lot of room in a small bedroom. We were able to completely get rid of two dressers by incorporating the under bed space.
Step 3 - Bedside Caddy - This will get rid of the night stands. These are an awesome use of space if you have a mattress and a box spring as this will fit between them. Perfect place for your reading glasses, notes, latest novel and more as you can see by the picture.
Step 4 - Portable Space Saving Fabric Closet - Now that you have got rid of the need of a bulky dresser and night stands, you should be able to sneak this portable closet with a cool decorative front flap against a wall. It is less than 18 inches deep.
This will also give you space for sheets and towels as well as hanging dresses, suits etc. I love the idea that you can hide your things with this roll down front with a beautiful picture of Eiffel Tower. If you click on the picture or the link you will see other options for the picture. It only uses 18 inches of floor space but can store so much!
Now all that needs to be on the floor in this small bedroom without a closet, is your bed and this portable space saving closet and you will have found loads of storage.
Step 5 - Over the Door Jewelry Storage - So you may be thinking... well that is great and everything but I use to use my dresser as a top for my jewelry and accessories? Well you can now utilize the back of the bedroom door with this cool over the door station.
At the end of the day you simply stand in front of this cabinet and take off your jewelry and you can put it away instantly. You also end up with a nice mirror when you close this door. This is a larger investment, so it depends on your budget.
Step 6 - More Storage for Small Things - There are so many really cool things online that won't cost you an arm and a leg and will take the stress out of living in a small bedroom without a closet.
By using the hanging space in your portable closet you can store things like scarves, shoes, other jewelry, belts and more.
How to Organize a Room with no Closet?
Get creative. Even if you simply do one of the above it will make a difference. You need to address a place to store folding clothing items and then hanging ones. By utilizing the space under the bed we were able to totally eliminate large room sucking dressers.
This also meant we didn't have to have movers take them which is less weight which was cheaper. We gave the dressers away to family and all that got moved with a bed and its frame.
I found the under the bed drawers to be the best and easiest solution to the "no closet" issue. So if you want to create some instant room in your tiny bedroom then put your bed on a frame and now you have loads of room that can be organized.
What if You Have a Bed Frame but it is not Tall Enough for Under Bed Storage?
I found this risers online that will raise your bed frame so that you can utilize that under bed space without replacing your present system.
So this is an option if your bed frame sits quite low. You have to think vertical and off the floor when it comes to small spaces.
All of the above do not require you to hang hooks or drill into walls which many Landlords (like ours) do not like.
Between under the bed, the portable closet with a closing flap, over the door and hanging storage you can fit a lot of things into this small room without it looking cluttered.
I hope I have inspired you to get creative with your things! Start with the purge and then get organized!
